New Studio Space
It has always been a dream of mine to have a dedicated art studio space outside of home, and it finally came true! A couple of months ago, I sent out a random email to a friend whose studio space I visited years ago to see if there had been a waitlist, for one day when I am ready for such a step. But life had another plan for me, it told me: you are ready, NOW. There was an opening, not only that, it was at such an opportune location, we simply could not say no. The friend I had thought might be interested in sharing the cost was also an immediate yes. So, here we are! Saw the space, signed the cheque, and started dreaming up all the possibilities in a matter of days. I could not sleep for several nights!
I am very fortunate that I have always had the space where I lived to keep a small corner of it dedicated to making art. However, to have a space dedicated to the craft amonst other artists and right in the heart of our community feels very special. It feels much more intentional as well. Whenever I take the short walk to the studio, I feel like I am walking through some magical Narnia door behind the closet to go to a special garden, a play space dedicated to creating, to make a mess, to be an artist.
At the time, I was also working on my next children’s book. It was such a fight to not spend every waking minute setting up. I really had to exert my self-control.
It has been 3 months since we got the keys to the space, and 1 month since I reached my deadline, and I can finally call this space done, for now. All the drafts, measuring, securing furniture for cheap off of marketplace…took surprising amount of effort. I think it will take many more seasons of making art in this space for all the pencils to move around and find it’s perfect spot and paint splatter to land on the right corner of the walls.
I look forward to being inspired in this space and growing as an artist of this community.
